There are 5 Evaluation Options Available. Parents select the option that best meets their needs:
- Option 1: Portfolio Evaluation- A Florida certified teacher chosen by the parent/guardian may evaluate the student’s progress based on the review of the student’s portfolio and a discussion with the student. The parent/guardian pays the evaluator a fee. Parents may use whatever evaluator they choose, even those not on the courtesy list of local evaluators provided by the home education office.
- Option 2: Nationally Normed Student Achievement Test- administered by a certified teacher within the last year. Please check here for a current list of state approved nationally normed student achievement tests. The parent/guardian pays the evaluator a fee.
- Option 3: State assessment tests- Florida Standards Assessments or End of Course exams administered by a certified teacher, at a location and under testing conditions approved by the district. Parents/guardians interested in this option will need to register the student for testing at the student’s zoned public school for the May end of year assessments. There is no cost for students to take the state assessments.
- Option 4: Psychological Evaluation- the student may be evaluated by a licenced psychologist. The parent/guardian pays the psychologist a fee for this service.
- Option 5: Other measure as agreed upon by the school district superintendent and parent- Under this option CCDS will accept a student’s transcript from Florida Virtual School (FLVS) showing successful completion of a year’s worth of work in the core subject areas but at a minimum in ELA and Math instruction. Students may use FLVS as a curriculum provider for free (proof of Florida residency is required). Transcripts from other accredited programs other than FLVS will be evaluated on a case by case basis and must at a minimum include independently graded work by a Florida certified teacher to be accepted for evaluation purposes.

Failure to submit an annual evaluation places the home education program in non-compliance and permits the Superintendent, after notice to the parent/guardian, to terminate the program. If the Home Education Office does not receive the evaluation, the home education program will be terminated and your child/children will be required to enroll/re-enroll in public or private school to meet the compulsory attendance law.
